Dream11 Fantasy Cricket App: Team Selection, Scoring, and What the Platform Does

Points come from statistical match events, not from whether the player's real team wins or loses. Runs scored, wickets taken, catches, run-outs, and strike-rate or economy-rate bonuses each carry a fixed point value that the app tallies live as the match progresses. A batter who scores 40 not-out on a losing side still earns full batting points; team result has no separate scoring weight.

Different formats weight these events differently. T20 scoring rewards strike rate and economy rate more heavily because a slow 40 in a 20-over match is a weaker real-world contribution than the same score in a 50-over game, and the points reflect that. Before selecting a team, the format-specific point system matters more than a player's general reputation.

You select 11 players within a credit cap, drawn from both real-world teams in the match, and then designate one Captain and one Vice-Captain from within that XI. The Captain's points are multiplied (commonly 2x) and the Vice-Captain's are multiplied at a lower rate (commonly 1.5x); every other player scores at the standard rate.

This multiplier is the single decision with the largest swing on your final score, which is why captain choice gets more attention than the other nine slots combined. A strong captain pick on a player who outperforms expectation moves the total up sharply; a weak pick on an in-form player who underperforms moves it the other way just as fast.

A mega contest pools a large number of entries; your team competes against thousands of others built from the same player pool, and the winning margin is often decided by small differences like captain choice or one unexpected performer. A small league caps entries far lower, so the same team competes against fewer rivals.

Dream11 now operates entirely in free-to-play mode under PROGA 2025. Contests award brand-backed rewards (vouchers, DreamBucks) rather than cash prizes, and there are no paid entry fees. The mechanics of team selection, scoring, and captain multipliers are identical to how they worked in the paid era — only the reward structure changed.

Team submission locks at the toss for the match, and playing-XI changes announced after your team is submitted but before the toss are still visible for edits, since the app opens editing again once the actual XI is confirmed. A submission made well before the toss carries the risk that a player you selected does not make the final XI, which zeroes their points entirely.

The safer sequence is building a draft early, then finalizing captain and vice-captain choices only after the toss and starting-XI announcement, since both pieces of information change the calculation meaningfully and neither is available earlier.

In addition to fantasy contests, Dream11 now runs creator-led live Watch Alongs during matches, where users can send virtual gifts (DreamBucks), participate in polls, and engage with sports creators. This second-screen layer is separate from team-selection mechanics but part of how the app retains engagement without paid contests.
